Butterworth Hall Timeline
Here are a few higlights and other events over the last 28 years:
- 1981 The opening concert by the Philharmonia Orchestra was conducted by Riccardo Muti
- 1982 The hall hosted the World Doubles Snooker Championships
- 1984 The Smiths played a concert on 2 Feb
- 1984 Concert to mark ten years of Warwick Arts Centre
- 1985 Those conducting in the Hall included Andre Previn and Simon Rattle
- 1986 The Butterworth Hall was officially named after the University’s first Vice Chancellor, Lord Butterworth by Sir Yehudi Menuhin
- 1990 A new Steinway D concert grand piano was bought for the Hall
- 1992 A performance of ‘The Light’ with a huge set transformed the stage into Biblical Palestine and included 300 performers
- 1992 Jo Brand proved so popular she returned within one month of her original performance and sold out again
- 1994 The hall’s sound system was improved
- 1998 Simon Rattle gave his last concert as Music Director of the CBSO in May
- 1999 Jasper Carrott sold out five performances, while Goodness Gracious Me sold out two
- 2000 Kirsty McColl plays her penultimate concert in the Hall
- 2004 Solists appearing in this year included Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Nigel Kennedy
- 2005 The first African Soul Rebels gig features Tinariwen and Daara J
- 2007 The West End production of Victoria Wood’s Acorn Antiques. Redevelopment starts
- 2008 English premiere of the National Theatre of Scotland’s international hit Black Watch
- Mar 2009 Work completed on the Hall interior and open for conferences
- Jul 2009 Two storey extension completed
- Oct 2009 Butterworth Hall open for events
