Mali actor Sotigui Kouyate dies aged 74

Monday 19th April

We were saddened to learn this weekend of the death of Malian actor Sotigui Kouyate, who graced our stage on two occasions with Peter Brook’s company.

He had a long association with UK theatre director Peter Brook, and performed at Warwick Arts Centre in 2001 in Le Costume, and in 2005 in Tierno Bokar (pictured)

The pair also collaborated on a 1983 screen production of Indian epic tale the Mahabharata.

Sotigui Kouyate was named best actor at the Berlin Film Festival last year for his remarkable portrayal of a French Muslim waiting for news of his son in the wake of the 7/7 bombings in the film London River.

He also wrote and staged a number of plays himself, and was the founder of the Mandeko Theatre in the Malian capital Bamako.
