I don’t think we’ve had so many young children on campus in such a short space of time. The work with children has started on our Start with Art project (see the Current Projects section of the Education page for full details). It means that over five hundred 5 & 6 year olds are visiting campus TWICE between late January and the middle of March. They’ll do our Sculpture Trail and our Colour Trail – visiting a number of the art works in The University of Warwick Collection at sites all over campus as part of their preparation for working as artists back in school to make new works of art to be permanently sited somewhere in their schools. It’s wonderful to see the children enjoying getting to grips with abstract works of all shapes and sizes and discovering what the works make them feel, or think about or remind them of. They are also very excited about being on campus in such a new and different environment. Which leads me to thank all our colleagues in University House and the Mathematics & Statistics Building who often find themselves surrounded by young children discussing the finer points of artists’ choice of colour and methods of making. Can’t wait to see what the children make themselves.
