Make it Reel - Day One

Tuesday 3rd August

Dom Breadmore of Predacom Productions, who is running the week for us, gives us a run down of what the kids did on their first day:

Today we started the week with an absolute screening fest! The first day is very much about inspiration and ideas generation. We worked together in different combinations and groups, trying to give everyone the opportunity to work with everyone else in the room. There are 24 young people on the summer school and we will have made four short films by the end of the week.

Todays screenings were:

Living Wigan and Morecambe Church Lads’ Brigade at Drill by Mitchell and Kenyon, 1901/2
An Interesting Story by James Williamson, 1905
Le Voyage Dans La Lune by George Melies, 1902
Where Were We by Matt Smith, 2002
Delphine by Nick Kelly, 2003
Yu Ming is Ainm Dom by Daniel O’Hara, 2003
Nits by Harry Wootliff, 2003

We also watched Bengraphics’ Visual Effects: 100 Years of Inspiration which includes excerpts from films depicting great post-production developments from the history of cinema including
1900 – The Enchanted Drawing
1903 – The Great Train Robbery
1923 – The Ten Commandments (Silent)
1927 – Sunrise
1933 – King Kong
1939 – The Wizard of Oz
1940 – The Thief of Bagdad
1954 – 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
1956 – Forbidden Planet
1963 – Jason and the Argonauts
1964 – Mary Poppins
1977 – Star Wars
1982 – Tron
1985 – Back to the Future
1988 – Who Framed Roger Rabbit
1989 – The Abyss
1991 – Terminator 2: Judgement Day
1992 – The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles
1993 – Jurassic Park
2004 – Spider-Man 2
2005 – King Kong
2006 – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
2007 – Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
2007 – The Golden Compass
2008 – The Spiderwick Chronicles
2008 – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

We didn’t just watch films all day, honest! We worked in groups discussing the processes of production, genres, likes and dislikes. We also found the time to go on a location tour to see what places around the Arts Centre are available for potential filming locations. Finally the groups began developing three film ideas based upon the day’s inspiration ready for tomorrow’s pitches.

Phew!
