This month there is another first for the Education Department. Publishing! The Department’s first ever book is just about to reach Coventry primary schools and Carly and Brian are stuffing the envelopes themselves to make sure that everything is perfect. The book is called Skin, Blood and Bone – creative teaching ideas to embed and extend scientific learning. It sounds a bit dry but it’s actually full of activities in dance, art, science, literacy, ICT and music that were our favourites and exciting for the children during last year’s Skin, Blood and Bone project, which was generously funded by The Wellcome Trust and the Higgs Charity. We put together Leigh CE primary and Frederick Bird primary with our artist Jo Buffery and The University of Warwick’s Professor of Clinical Anatomy Peter Abrahams to co-ordinate work in science, dance and visual art to deepen the learning in and understanding of all three. The final visual art works and dance pieces (all looking at different aspects of human anatomy) were shared with children in the two schools and other schools in Coventry. It was a highly successful project which more than achieved its aims – and now we want to spread the word. Hence Carly and Brian posting off the books to Science Co-ordinators in every primary school in the city. Here’s hoping we can get additional funding to print some more and spread the word even further!
