The creative power of young people

Wednesday 31st March

Just had a remarkable two days being thrilled and moved by the creative power of young people.  Have been to both Pershore and West Bromwich for performances as part of Boys Dancing.  Our Worcestershire lads, from schools and pupil referral units, showed a great range of dance styles and high levels of skill on stage at the Number 8 Community Arts Centre.  A packed house really showed their appreciation and delight at the boys’ energy.  And last night, our Sandwell lads took over The Public, using the whole of the ground floor for a promenade dance performance which blew our socks off!  For many that would have been their first ever performance but they gave 100% and the reaction of an excellent turnout of audience showed how powerful their work and commitment had been.

Yesterday also we had the final sharing of this term’s Cov Cool Kids with over 150 children at Corpus Christi primary school in Coventry.  They were sharing with each other all the work they had done over the term – with 12 films, 3 songs and 2 pieces of theatre from children in Years 1 – 4.  The live pieces were beautifully performed and the films clearly showed the amount of work and eye for detail that the children had used in their making.  And the children were such a good audience too!  Really showing respect for and interest in everyone else’s work – they all know how much time and energy goes into the making of it all.

So, a very busy couple of days but so exciting. And so good to see that when you give young people the creative lead and give their work status, how much investment they make in it and how proud they (and others) are of their achievements.  Well done everyone and thank you so much.

  • Here, here! When young people are given ownership of creative projects they rarely fail to amaze, yet we older (and often more cynical) people rarely fulfil our duty to encourage this. It's so crucial to their personal development and the enjoyment it brings is wholly mutual. Keep up the good work.
