Well, I’m up here all by myself now.
Caroline’s show is going well, we’re really into the swing of things now. A couple of people leaving in tears after each performance. (In a good way.)
And its been a busy couple of days of shows for me too. Paul’s already mentioned it but I thought David Leddy’s Sub Rosa was marvellous. Very dark and foreboding.
My absolute top tip so far is Operation Greenfield by Little Bulb – its like Napoleon Dynamite meets Forced Entertainment. They are a very fine up and coming company.
Forest Fringe opened yesterday morning, in the few years its been running its become a true Edinburgh institution embodying all that is experimental and daring. It’s a great place to see work in development and very short runs of shows. My two FF highlights so far have been The Love Calculator produced by Angie Bual who dreamt up The National Theatre of Scotland’s Allotment programme and Nigel and Louise of Shunt’s Dolls. I’m afraid they both finished this afternoon but look out for them in the future.
Today has been a whirlwind of meetings although I have been able to catch a couple of things – most interestingly En Route, an audio piece that takes place on the streets of Edinburgh. Needless to say it was pouring with rain when I started… but it was well worth it! I’m currently in the process of developing an audio tour piece myself at the moment with the brilliant Melanie Wilson – a fairytale adventure for children commissioned by Theatre Sandbox and The Lyric Hammersmith. I go straight into a week of R&D at the end of the festival – it was extremely useful to see how other people use the format.
Oh – also worth catching, Paper Birds’ The Others at The Pleasance, excellent cast and some great ideas delicately threaded together.
Right, that’s all for now, I’m off to Tom Wainwright’s Pedestrian.
Hopefully have time for another update tomorrow.
