Hoardings Mural Project
A small group of children from Leigh C of E Primary School, Frederick Bird Primary School and The Westwood School were on campus in July 2010, painting some of the hoardings surrounding the construction of the new Material & Analytical Science Building. The children had already had a visit in school from a member of the Physics Department, and then visited campus to meet and work with some of our scientists, before creating designs with a visual artist, ready to be transferred to the hoardings.
The design is a series of panels, with 3 different elements: famous scientists that have been inspirational; some of the Physics scientists the children met when on campus and depictions of some objects the children viewed through special microscopes in the physics department.
The children sanded and base-coated the boards and added the base colours before moving on to the actual designs. Working with a small palette of colours, each image is made of several painted layers, created with a series of large-scale stencils. The children worked on site with their teachers, and visual artist Jo Buffery to bring the BAM hoardings to life.
The project was funded by The University of Warwick and was managed by the Education Department at Warwick Arts Centre.
