Cast: Antony Sher

Playwright: Nicholas Wright

The best of British Theatre broadcast live via satellite to screens at Warwick Arts Centre.

In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber-merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.

Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work at the National includes Primo and Stanley – returns to play Jacob.

“A love-letter to the movies and an appealingly intelligent evocation of Jewish folk culture” **** Michael Billington, The Guardian

Simon says: “When you find a writer that you love it’s like finding a best friend. Dickens never ceases to delight me. There’s something in him which chimes with me: the energy; the scope; the generosity; the endless inventiveness of it. There is in Dickens the spirit of the medieval carnival that just deeply turns me on. That sense of the world as one big body and a celebration and embrace of all its grotesqueness, the ugliness, the smell, the sweat.”

This promises to be an extraordinary evening, celebrating a great novelist.

“All that succession and repetition of massed humanity. All those vile bodies. And now a party in a mental hospital…”

1939 begins with a fabulous New Year’s Party in London frequented by the fashionable aristocratic set known as ‘The Bright Young Things’, all beautiful and rich and senseless. Amongst them are Adam Fenwick-Symes and Nina Blount, the fiancées fated to never quite tie the knot, Agatha Runcible the vapid but loveable heiress, the flamboyant and ever charming Miles Malpractice, Archie Schwert the copycat, and Simon Balcairn who is also the gossip columnist tearing his friends to shreds.

Nobody can be trusted, nothing is certain, love has a price and money is worthless. Everything is about to collide in a rush of fire and deception and a man with a very odd moustache.

Vile Bodies is the student-written adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel, a tale as true now as it was then about the role of celebrity, money and love.

With a large cast of student actors and an all student team, Warwick Arts Centre is home to the greatest party of the year.

Francesca Millican-Slater: I Promise to Swim the Channel (or the Story of How I Might)
Work in progress

In times of trouble I run to water, and I know I am not the only one. English coasts are lined with wearied souls who seek answers in horizons, in waves and changing tides. The sea makes my heart lurch like seeing an old lover, makes my stomach contract like when meeting a new one. So in order to get to know it, in order to really understand it, I’m going to swim the channel.
That was two years ago.

And I just moved to the most landlocked city in the country.
The story continues. The swimming continues (sort of).

LCBWho You Calling Frappucchino
Work in progress

My Dad used to tell me, “Son, If you can make a woman laugh then you’ll always win, even with those big ears of yours.” Partly forgetting that I got them from him.’

Who you Calling Frappuccino? is LCB’s witty response to the Oscar Wilde classic The Importance of Being Earnest. As one of Birmingham’s best up and coming Poets and Story Tellers, LCB takes the audience with him on a ride through his world of micro-stories and observations, boys and their troubles with girls, and accidently falling for Baristas in Starbucks with unlikely tattoos. All told in his own unique style, walking to his own unique beat.

Talking Birds – Decathlon
Work in progress

This is the copy written by Nick Walker about the content of the performance he will be presenting to audiences at around teatime. The copy is a hundred words long and gives a broad indication of the show’s intellectual territory, as well contain a small joke, though it might be hard to spot. Like the work he is presenting, this copy is mainly fiction, with one or two hard facts, and will include a reference to Daley Thompson and the ‘84 Olympics. There will almost certainly be some music in the show, but probably not in the copy.

Teasel Theatre – Grisly Tales from Tumblewater
(excerpt)

Welcome to Tumblewater, not that it’s a welcoming place – unless you’re an undertaker or an umbrella salesman. Caspian Prye, the twisted landowner, controls everything and everyone; even the police. Into this world stumbles Daniel Dorey, a fearless orphan armed only with his wits and a satchel of spine-chilling stories.

Can he bring down Caspian Prye? Can he rescue the girl in the distant room? Can he even stay alive long enough to tell his tales?
Dickens meets Dahl via Horrible Histories with laughs, frights and live music in this playfully gothic one-man adventure for all ages 8+.

Bite Size is a day long showcase of new work from some of the most original and intrepid theatre-makers working in the West Midlands.

Untied Artists – For Their Own Good
Work in progress, 40 minutes
14yrs+

How does our complex and amorphous relationship with other animals affect our own humanity?
Accompanied by a menagerie of exquisitely crafted puppets and automata, two performers investigate the pitfalls of being high up on the evolutionary chain.

Taking source material from interviews and documentary footage of veterinary surgeries, farms, abattoirs, hospitals and homes, this show examines how changing attitudes about how we care for animals might just tell us something about how we care for ourselves.

Devised by the company with text by Arzhang Pezhman

I in earth, in heaven, or in hell?
Sleeping or waking? Mad or well advised?
Known unto these, and to myself disguised!

Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. And for no one more so than Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home.

Do you know me, sir? Am I Dromio?
Am I your man? Am I myself?

Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy is staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus of Syracuse.

Playwright: Oliver Goldsmith

To come to my house, to call for what he likes, to turn me out of my own chair, to insult the family, to order his servants to get drunk, and then to tell me, “This house is mine, sir”. By all that’s impudent it makes me laugh.

Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old pal’s son with a view to marriage. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective son-in-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality, he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues.

One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops To Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family.
