CloseA lavish costume drama from Denmark set within the royal family at the end of the 18th century. Queen Caroline (Vikander), the English sister of George III, is trapped in a loveless marriage to Christian VII, the unstable King of Denmark, who openly dislikes his young bride and neglects her in favour of drinking, gambling and prostitutes.
When Struensee (Mikkeslen), a physician, is assigned to help the king, he soon wins favour at court and embarks on a passionate affair with the lonely Caroline. Spurred on by his idealistic Enlightenment views, the couple hatch a plan to reform Danish society forever.
