Iñárritu (21 Grams, Babel) goes into the darker side of Barcelona in this harrowing drama. Uxbal (Bardem) is a corrupt and ailing policeman trying to reconcile with a past love and secure a future for his two children as his own death draws near. Bardem dazzles as the doomed Uxbal, exquisitely balancing his devotion to his family with his harsh professional life. He is ably backed by a fine supporting cast and the technical team excel.
This film is something of a departure for Iñárritu, moving from his more epic dramas spanning continents to focusing on a single family in a tiny apartment. The departure is a massive success with this heart-breaking story.
