After a darkly funny failed attempt to throw himself off the Brooklyn Bridge, angst-ridden 16-year-old Craig (Gilchrist) checks himself into Argenon Hospital, only to find that the youth facility is temporarily closed and he’s in the adult psych ward facing a five-day minimum stay.
This isn’t quite the quick fix he was hoping for, but fortunately he’s taken under the wing of Bobby (Galifianakis), a worldly wide and independent minded fellow patient. Hospital routine is far removed from Craig’s world of high expectations and competitive schooling, but as the days pass, he learns much about life and love both inside and outside the ward.
Based on Ned Vizzini’s bestselling novel, and with a nod to John Hughes’ teen classics, this funny and intelligent film from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson, Sugar) is marked by well-developed characters and terrific performances.
