A young housewife Guiliana (Vitti) struggles to hide her mental illness from her husband, a plant manager. When she meets Zeller (Harris), a British engineer en route to Patagonia, he seems to understand what Guiliana wants from life. Embarking upon an affair, she strives to come to terms with her emotional pain, but she is left vulnerable and isolated by the reality of the world around her.
