Samson & Delilah was rapturously received when it premiered at Cannes last year, and won the Caméra d’Or, while Australian critics have called it ‘captured lightning in a bottle’ and ‘one of the most wonderful films this country has ever produced’.
This love story begins at a remote outpost – home to a small Aboriginal community – in the Central Australian desert. Samson (McNamara) is woken each morning by the sound of his brother’s band jamming repetitively outside, and automatically starts sniffing petrol fumes. Delilah (Gibson) lives close by and tends to her ageing Nana. The couple communicate non-verbally, but deeply expressively, and it’s clear they rely on, and need, each other to get by in their mundane circumstances. Tragedy strikes leaving the pair to feel ostracised, and they run away to Alice Springs, where their love for each other becomes an even greater necessity, the reason for their very survival.
