Francis Ford Coppola’s first self-penned film since 1974’s The Conversation is a saga of family strife.
17-year-old Bennie arrives in Buenos Aires in search of his older brother who has been missing for more than a decade. Their family emigrated from Italy to Argentina when the brothers were very young, before the family moved to New York.
When Bennie finds his brother, the volatile and melancholy poet Tetro, he is not at all what he expected and the two brothers grapple with the haunting experiences of their shared past.
The film is shot in lustrous black and white, with occasional flashbacks in colour, bringing to mind the style of Rumble Fish.
A loving homage to both the French New Wave and steamy 1950s melodramas, Tetro is a disturbing but gorgeously shot family tragedy.
