From 1947, the first sound screen adaptation of Dickens’ novel, finely directed by Cavalcanti with a screenplay by John Dighton.

When Nicholas Nickleby’s father dies and leaves his family destitute, his uncle finds Nicholas a job teaching in an oppressive and brutal school in Yorkshire. Fleeing the school along with one of the persecuted boys, Smike, he joins a troop of actors.
