"Kissing Alma, I was home - I knew I was finally home."
Set in 1960s South Carolina Yellowman tells the tale of Alma and Eugene, who have known each other since they were children. As their friendship blossoms into love, they dream of escape and yearn for the adventure of new lives. Raised on too much liquor and too little love, Alma struggles to free herself from poverty and create a brighter future while Eugene battles with the bitterness and jealousy of his overbearing father.
Yellowman brings to life these characters, their friends and families, and their entire South Carolina world, in this heart-warming and compelling love story about overcoming the past and searching for acceptance.
Moving, intelligent and highly poetic Yellowman is written by OBIE Award winning Dael Orlandersmith, one of the most original and important playwrights in America today.
Nominated for the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2002 and already one of the most widely-performed plays in the US, Yellowman is a beautiful, spellbinding and inspiring piece storytelling.
"This is a play to restore one's faith in American drama... had the audience clamouring to its feet." The Guardian
"Deeply moving. A play with an intense, tragic trajectory. Almost unbearably affecting." Daily Telegraph
"A landmark in theatre history... enthralling... mind-altering." New York Times
Presented in association with Rachel Tackley and by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd.
