Concert Series 2007-2008

Warwick Arts Centre is delighted to present 10 outstanding classical concerts between October 2007 and May 2008

Haydn - Symphony No.60
Mozart - Piano Concerto in A, K.414 (arranged for harp)

Interval
Mozart - Symphony No.41 (Jupiter)

Conductor: Gerard Korsten
Harp: Catrin Finch

The London Mozart Players and leading harpist Catrin Finch perform Mozart's Piano Concerto in a most original transcription for Harp and Orchestra.

We get a splendid glimpse of the comic Haydn in his Symphony No. 60, which makes use of material from his own score of incidental music to the play Le Distrait. Among the many musical jokes and 'distractions' are needlessly protracted codas, too many movements, abrupt and inappropriate thematic incursions and, unforgettably, complete pandemonium as the strings stop the entire performance in order to retune!

K.414 is one of Mozart's early concertos for Vienna, and formed part of his attempt to gain acceptance as both pianist and composer in the city. It is occasionally heard in an arrangement for piano and string quartet, but is performed tonight in a new arrangement made for Catrin Finch by harp virtuoso Skaila Kanga.

If the concert began with low comedy, it concludes on the heights of Mount Olympus for the aptly named Jupiter Symphony, Mozart's final symphonic utterance. Composed in 1788 in only a few weeks (and never performed in the composer's lifetime) the Jupiter represents a bringing to perfection of the symphonist's craft. Its triumphant last movement blends contrapuntal wizardry with breath-taking structural control to produce what remains one of the most thrilling experiences in the concert hall.
