Shostakovich - Symphony No.10
Orff - Carmina Burana
Conductors Lucy Griffiths, Paul McGrath
Soon after Stalin's death Dimitri Shostakovich began urgent work on his tenth symphony. This grand and powerful work encompasses a maelstrom of emotional states, from the optimistic anticipation of new beginnings to the release of the personal and artistic subjugation the composer suffered under the dictator's reign.
Carl Orff's setting of the 24 poems of the Carmina Burana is one of the most popular works to come out of the twentieth century. The texts are frank avowals of earthly pleasure: eating, dancing, drinking, gambling and lovemaking. They proclaim the beauty of life and the glory of springtime.
