It's 1988, and papal fever has gripped the Uruguayan border town of Melo. Speculation is rife that over fifty thousand Brazilians will visit for John Paul II's highly anticipated visit. This impoverished community believe that this will spell both their spiritual and material salvation, as the faithful will be sure to buy all the chorizo sausages they can produce. Beto (Troncoso) has another idea. He will build a public washroom with help from his friend and neighbour Valvulina (Silva).
This moving story that blends the sacred and profane is an elegantly crafted tale of the frenzy that ensues when a celebrity comes to town. The only thing that seems clear is that neither the pope nor a toilet can make anyone's dreams come true.
