Less controversial than much of Breillat's work, but as rigorous and psychologically revealing as anything she has made, this adaptation of a novel by Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly centres on the question (asked both by the bride-to-be's grandmother and her maliciously gossiping friends) of whether the womanising Ryno de Marigny will give up his mistress of ten years, the notorious Vellini, on marriage to the virtuous Hermangarrde. Swiftly immersing us in the fashions - not just the clothes and hairstyles, but the sexual and social ethics - of the 1830s, Breillat's meticulous direction and script glosses the mores and literary concerns of the period, but also relates a rich, engrossing story.

Sharp, witty, utterly unsentimental and gravely beautiful.
