Dir: Claude Miller
France 2007 105mins subtitled
Cast: Cecile de France, Ludvine Sagnier, Mathieu Amalric
Sliding fluidly between the 50s, the 80s and World War II, Claude Miller's moving and complex film is based on the autobiographical novel by Philippe Grimbert, in which the writer embarks on a search for self and for long-hidden family secrets.
As an adult, Francois (Amalric) puzzles over his boyhood self, a nervous child haunted by fantasies of a phantom brother. Francois comes to explore the history of a family struggling to survive during the Occupation, and forced to decide between declaring and concealing their Jewish identity.
Subtly delving into questions of personal, national and cultural identity, A Secret is a finely directed, memorably acted film that brings something new to French cinema's contemplation of wartime trauma.
