Anarchic, feisty but growing old, high society drop-out Judy Haussman (Walters) remains connected to the free-spiritedness of the 1960s while holding court in her dilapidated Art Deco house on the Devon coast. After an operation, she’s joined by wayward offspring Nick (Kinnear) and Libby (McCrory), sharp-eyed granddaughter Summer, local doctor Peter, and Daniel, a troubled teenager who makes use of the family’s crumbling swimming pool. Together they share a few sweltering months in this chaotic world of all-day drinking, infatuations, long-held resentments, free love and failure.
Julie Walters is one of Britain’s best-loved and most versatile actors. Returning to the stage for the first time in over a decade, Walters made her name starring in Willy Russell’s Educating Rita, for which she won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.
Rory Kinnear is this generation’s most prolific stage actor, recently winning the Evening Standard Best Actor award for his critically-acclaimed performance in Hamlet at the National Theatre.
Helen McCrory is known for her impressive character performances, most notably as Cherie Blair in The Queen and Narcissa Malfoy in Harry Potter. On stage, she shone in Sam Mendes’ double bill at the Donmar Warehouse in Twelfth Night and Uncle Vanya.
