Production Company: A Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester and Lyric Hammersmith Production
Simon Stephens’ blistering drama comes to us after a critically acclaimed run at London’s Lyric Hammersmith. It focuses on a bunch of students in a sixth form in Manchester as they prepare themselves not only for their exams but for the end of their school lives.
As the end of term approaches, the group contemplate their futures. But as the world begins to open up before them, they are faced with the very real danger it could swallow them whole.
This play exposes the pressures faced by supposedly ‘ordinary’ pupils and the dark side of society, simmering below the surface of these sheltered lives.
It’s called Punk Rock. Don’t let the title put you off. It’s not about Punk, nor indeed about music, it’s a contemporary play exploring real life and its consequences.
“Critics who see a lot of theatre are occasionally privileged, very occasionally, to see a piece that immediately feels like one of the major dramas of our time … and for me that’s what Punk Rock is.” Mark Lawson, Front Row, BBC Radio 4
“Superb… Punk Rock combines emotional truth and raw intensity to thrilling theatrical effect.” ***** The Daily Telegraph

This is an amazing new play and one that has very important things to say about that state of education and the pressures we place on young people. I saw it in Sheffield with a group of GCSE students and was blown away by it - we've been talking about it ever since. Superb writing, excellent pereformances by a young cast, well directed and designed, very accessible to young people but should be seen by everyone. Contains very strong language.

Very well played, recommended to see with teenagers. Contains strong language, but this is how a lot of them talk these days. Very important to see for parents of teenagers as well.

Very nice performance worth seeing. Reminds me of the modernized Spring Awakening, since it deals with similar issues and leads to another tragic ending ...
