The story of a show within a show…
Three Cardinals in crimson robes are on an evangelical mission, touring their puppet show to tell a history of the world. But with no puppets, they enter the stage themselves to act out a naive and unwittingly hilarious journey from The Bible, through The Crusades to contemporary Middle Eastern politics and, ultimately, The Apocalypse.
Backstage things are even more frantic and fractious. The cardinals’ young Muslim stage manager is feeling overworked, and their scripts aren’t exactly the same. They are all doing the best, but they are only human…
A visual play about faith and belief, The Cardinals is playful, thought provoking and very funny.
“A company of real artistic innovators who always have new things to say and new ways of saying them … probably no more exciting company working in the UK today.” The Guardian
“One of Britain’s most innovative and exciting theatre companies.” Independent on Sunday
