After their startling successful production of Tis Pity She’s a Whore back in February 2012, Cheek by Jowl directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod return to the French language with a new production of Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi.
Ubu Roi charts the exploits of the despotic King Ubu and stands as a startling challenge to the comfortable and conventional. Menacing, petulant and wonderfully anarchic, the play’s piercing humour continues to fascinate us, enabling a world of rich theatrical possibility in a parade of the grotesque that keeps pace with our own times.
Cheek by Jowl has established an international reputation for bringing “fresh life to the classics using intense, vivid performances like a laser of light to set the text ablaze” (The Guardian). The company is an Artistic Associate at the Barbican, London, and has toured Russian, French and English language productions to over 300 cities in
40 countries.
