A New Dimension with Jerry Dammers
Friday 12 February 2010
Jerry Dammers formed Coventry’s own The Specials in 1977 and now, with the band back on the road without him, the founder of 2-Tone is utilising his throbbing bank of keyboards as part of the Spatial AKA Orchestra on Thursday 4 March.
The nineteen-piece collective present a tribute to Sun Ra, prolific jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his “cosmic philosophy”, musical compositions and performances.
The gig will also include Cedric ‘Irn’ Brookes’ spiritual reggae, Alice Coltrane’s eastern mysticism, Tommy McCook’s deep jazzy ska, Martin Denny’s dark exotica and even to one or two versions of Dammers’ own songs.
Some of the country’s best jazz musicians perform, with occasional vocalists, inside Dammers’ rhythmic setting which draws on funk, reggae, rock and recent styles such as hip hop, jungle or dubstep.
The orchestra has received rave reviews from both jazz and rock/pop critics, and in Dammers’ words is ‘aimed at everyone’.
Tickets for Jerry Dammers’ Spatial A.K.A Orchestra can be booked online or from the Box Office on 024 7652 4524.
