The next stage of our Boys Dancing project has got off to a cracking start!! Our big plan for the next six months is to make six dance films – The Quiet Man Suite. Together they will take six different looks at how, or if, an individual can make an impact in prompting social change. The films will be made with up to 700 or so lads from schools and youth centres across the West Midlands. Led by a large team of dancers, film makers and composers, the films will all be ready by the time of the Olympics – that’s if we get all the funding we need to add to our Dancing for the Games, Cultural Olympiad grant. We have our fingers crossed.
The work started recently when our team of six dancers had three days Research and Development on the project led by renowned director/choreographer/physical theatre practitioner Liam Steel. (By the way, many thanks to our friends at the Coventry Performing Arts Service for the use of their lovely Studio in Willenhall). Liam led the team through provocations, discussions, testing physical challenges, dance interpretations and improvisatory work, all giving them plenty of time to think, talk and play with ideas that will feed into their preparations for the next R&D in November and the work with the boys beginning in January.
The work was recorded and you’re invited to take a look at the first inklings of what may end up on the big screen in The Quiet Man Suite – take a look at the video below.
