What it's like doing work experience

Wednesday 14th November

Here Ella, who has joined us for a weeks work experience, tells us all about it!

When I received the letter from Warwick Arts Centre telling me I had got the placement I was giddy with delight. However, my initial jubilation was followed by a twinge of apprehension. I didn’t know how an average business worked, let alone one of the biggest arts venues in the country!

I realise now that my total ignorance has been more of a blessing than a curse. It has meant that I have been able to learn a colossal amount about all the different departments and how they all work together. It may sound silly, but I never before realised quite how much there is to do. From marketing and finance to front of house and box office, every department has an important job to do.

I have genuinely really enjoyed this week, and it has changed the way I think about venues. I can hardly pass a leaflet without thinking ‘Marketing did that!‘or see a painting on the wall without thinking ‘The Mead Gallery put that there.’ I have learnt about the key work of finance, education and of course the very busy and utterly lovely box office. I was also lucky enough to observe a get in, which opened my eyes. I am looking forward to learning about the music department, ops and the all important programme department. I have learnt a great deal about this placement which has surprised and interested me. One of the most important things I have learnt is that without exception, all the staff are terrifylingly lovely. I am very grateful to everyone for being so welcoming, particularly Carly, the education officer, for organising the placement. Thank you!
