I received an anonymous comment card last week, complaining about how many depressing films there were in the programme.
I can sympathise. I have watched them all. And plenty more besides. I watch movies so that you don’t have to. But the ones that do get into the programme do not arrive there by chance – or spite. I would like to think that the programme represents the best available films at the time. It is true, we have occasional famine of comedy but I can only give you the best available and frankly, is there anything more depressing than a bad or lame comedy?
I would also hope that what is shown is representative of the best of the human spirit, frequently in extreme adversity, for which there is always the reassurance that there is always someone worse off than you are. For example, the programmer ploughing through a succession of films that do not make the grade and are still bleak and depressing!
It is summer. We are basking in the reflection of the joy which is Potiche and can look forward to the positive sentiments on education in The First Grader and Larry Crowne, the frank irreverence of Beginners, the outrageousness (but somehow quite reflective) Bridesmaids and revivals of classic Ealing titles, Whiskey Galore and Kind Hearts and Coronets.
I do my best!!
