Afternoon,
Our new producer at China Plate, the wonderful Rosie Kelly, has been the first up to the Edinburgh Festival this year and we thought you’d like to hear her recommendations – especially as a couple of the shows only play until Sunday. Ed and I are heading up next week so we’ll miss them unfortunately but if you are up there this weekend then maybe try and get along. Rosie’s enthusiasm for The TEAM show was well founded, the company won a coveted Fringe First Award this morning!
More from Ed and I as of next week, but for now here’s Rosie:
“Despite a moment of despair whilst queuing in mud under torrential rain, this year’s festival provided some great experiences for me. My clear highlight, as seems to be the case with most, was The TEAM’s ‘Mission Drift’ at Traverse, a spirited musical exploring the American Frontier. At the same venue, ‘Man of Valour’ was a very impressive piece of theatre with an incredible performance by Paul Reid, although you need to keep your concentration so be cautious if you’re on the brink of passing out from fatigue/candle burning. Unfortunately both shows are only playing until Sunday.
Rash Dash’s ‘Scary Gorgeous’ (Bedlam) and Paper Bird’s ‘Thirsty’ (Pleasance Courtyard) are both headed up by two strong, talented female performers and explore different elements of the female psyche that seem prevalent in our culture, and are well worth a look. I also absolutely loved Nigel Barrett and Louise Mari’s ‘One Man Show’ at C Venues – it was hilarious, visually innovative and Barrett’s performance is utterly charming.
If you need a break from theatre, the moving and important exhibition ‘400 Women’ is on at Canongate Venture. This exploration of worldwide gender-violence, curated in and around the rooms of a crumbling building off Canongate, is getting 5 star reviews and is, at the moment, a bit of a hidden gem.”
