PULSE: The Big Debate

Tuesday 22nd March

Last week I took part in the Big Debate that launched this year’s PULSE Festival. I was part of a panel of guests asked to talk about the fortunes of regional theatre and to challenge the myth that (as far as theatre makers are concerned) all roads lead to London where the streets are paved with gold. Obviously, as a theatre director and producer mostly working in the West Midlands I don’t think that is the case (nor did the rest of the panel as it happens) but I do think that this “London vs. The Regions” view is a bit of a false dichotomy. My view is that it benefits everyone for London to be a unique and strong hub for our theatre industry but that this shouldn’t ever be at the expense of a thriving regional ecology.

Anyway, if you are interested a summary of what was said can be found here and check out the programme if you live nearby – it’s GREAT!
