Digital Film Premiere to be introduced by Neve Campbell

Wednesday 03 March 2010

Join us on Monday 15 March for the UK premiere of the much anticipated film Dirty Oil – a powerful documentary about the devastating impact of tar sands developments on the environment and local communities in Alberta, Canada – and the implications for the world as a whole.

The film will be introduced at 6.30pm by the film’s narrator, Canadian actress and environmentalist Neve Campbell (Scream, Party of Five) via satellite live and direct from London.

Made by Academy Award-nominated director Leslie Iwerk, Dirty Oil is the first feature-length documentary film about tar sands.

The process of extracting usable oil from tar sands – which is hugely energy-intensive and pollution-heavy – is a massive threat to the natural environment and the health of nearby communities. But the impacts spread more widely too.

For a start, almost without anybody noticing, the US is now importing more oil from Canada than from anywhere else, and most of it is from tar sands – and that’s feeding, rather than reducing, America’s self-admitted “addiction” to oil. In meeting this demand, Canada has now become one of the world’s biggest emitters of greenhouse gases, with potentially disastrous impacts on global warming and climate change. There are also implications on a wide range of financial investments, savings and pensions, which might be at risk when world governments start clamping down on carbon-intensive industries.

This one-night-only UK premiere event on 15 March, devised by campaign partners The Co-operative, will be beamed live by satellite to selected cinemas across the country, including Warwick Arts Centre.

Following the screening audience members will be able to text questions on Dirty Oil or tar sands to an expert panel, including Paul Monaghan, Head of Ethics and Sustainable Development, The Co-operative, Leslie Iwerks, Director, DIRTY OIL (previous Academy Award winner), George Poitras, Mikisew Cree indigenous First Nation (Chief from June 1999 to June 2002), Colin Butfield, Head of Campaigns, WWF-UK.

Tickets for Dirty Oil can be booked online or from the Box Office on 024 7652 4524.
