Having secured a place in the hearts of most anime and manga fans, we are sure that those already fond of Akira will be delighted that it has been re-mastered and re-released 20 years after its original release. For those new to Japanese cinema, don’t miss the chance to see this cult classic on the big screen and find out what the fuss is all about. Akira will be showing Thu 18 & Fri 19 Aug.

It’s Neo-Tokyo, 2019. They city is well on the way to re-building after World War III. Kaneda and Tetsuo, two high school drop-outs, are members of a joy-riding motorcycle gang. In the opening scene, Kaneda and Tetsuo stumble upon a secret government project to develop telekinetic humans, apparently for use as weapons. Tetsuo learns of the existence of his ‘peer’ Akira, the project’s most powerful subject, and determines to challenge him… Find out more and book tickets

Studio Ghilbi’s (Ponyo, Spirited Away) reworking of an English classic, Arrietty is based on The Borrowers and is the perfect entertainment for audiences young and old. Come and spend time with these tiny people, only 10cm tall, who live under the floorboards of typical human households. Directed by veteran Studio Ghilbi animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi, this new adaptation of the classic children’s novel is exquisitely detailed and utterly enchanting.

Screenings of Arrietty on 26 and 27 August will use the original soundtrack (Japanese) with subtitles, and screenings on 28 and 29 August will be dubbed
