The Descendants

BAFTA and Oscar nominations announced...

Wednesday 25 January 2012

It’s all kicking off in the world of film right now, as we find ourselves right in the thick of awards season. The Golden Globes have already been dished out, and film fans have now turned their attention to our own home-grown awards, The BAFTAs, to be swiftly followed by The Oscars at the end of February. The nominations for both were announced recently, and as usual they sparked a flurry of internet debate: Which nomination was a surprise? Who was criminally overlooked? And most importantly, who’s going to win?

Here at Warwick Arts Centre, we had a close eye on the announcements, and we’re pleased to see that many of the films receiving nominations will be playing at the cinema here over the coming weeks.

Unsurprisingly, The Artist fared well, with 10 Oscar nominations, and 12 BAFTA nods. It was also no surprise at all to see Meryl Streep nominated at both ceremonies for her role in The Iron Lady, or to see George Clooney heading up the Best Actor lists for The Descendants. Both are expected to take home the gongs on the night.

Stephen Spielberg’s epic War Horse fared well in the more technical categories, and also garnered a nomination in the ten-strong list for Best Film.

There were raised eyebrows at some of the omissions in the Oscar acting cateogries, but the BAFTAs went some way towards redressing the balance by handing Michael Fassbender a well-deserved nomination for Shame . Steve McQueen’s film has also been nominated for Outstanding British Film.

You can see Shame and The Iron Lady this week at Warwick Arts Centre.
