Introducing Luke Sheppard - our BBC Dance Fellow

Thursday 03 November 2011

Warwick Arts Centre is pleased to announce that local choreographer Luke Sheppard is our new BBC Dance Fellow.

Following a successful bid to the BBC Performing Arts Fund, Warwick Arts Centre is part of a nationwide scheme that aims to support and develop talented young dancers as they build a career in performance, choreography or producing. Luke Sheppard has joined Warwick Arts Centre in the role of Choreograpaher, and will work on our ongoing Boys Dancing project.

Luke was born in Birmingham and first took to dancing aged 16, when he sought out opportunities to train further and joined Birmingham-based Penelope’s Dance Studio. He went on to study Dance, Theatre and Professional Practice at Coventry University, where he gained a wealth of choreography experience for his course, societies and local projects. He first came on Warwick Arts Centre’s radar as a part of the Boys Dancing project.

The BBC Performing Arts Fund has awarded £130,000 to 13 dance organisations across the UK in order to host a bespoke placement opportunity as part of its Dance Fellowships scheme. The fellowships aim to support talented individuals through the early stages of their dance careers, using these placements offer them the guidance of experienced mentors whilst they showcase their work and build networks in the industry. A word from Luke:

“This fellowship at Warwick Arts Centre is a great opportunity for me. It is a chance to network, test my skills in a professional environment and learn from the people that work in the industry to make a living. I have already began to see growth within my self as a choreographer and am excited to see how I can use some of these newly found ideas to create work. I feel so lucky to have this opportunity fresh out of University and look forward to learning as much as I can.”
