Ping! Music vs Table Tennis - Sat 3 Mar

Monday 27 February 2012

Join us on Sat 3 Mar for Ping! Music vs Table Tennis and a variety of free events for all the family including drumming workshops, ping pong badge-making, an attempt to break the world record for most table tennis players taking part in a consecutive rally, and the chance to challenge the Robo Pong 2050 table tennis robot.

Warwick Arts Centre and the Coull Quartet present Ping! Music vs Table Tennis, part of PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music 20×12 programme, celebrating the 2012 Cultural Olympiad and the Music Nation weekend.

Ping! is a collaboration between composer and Birmingham Conservatoire Head of Composition Joe Cutler, Coull String Quartet (Quartet in Residence for the University of Warwick) and Fusion Table Tennis Club which will explore the distinct sounds and rhythms that table tennis players can make. The piece will create intricate cross-rhythms between table tennis players and the string quartet, with film by international visual artist Tom Dale. Ping! is a free site-specific work, with the premiere performances of Ping! taking place on the stage of the Butterworth Hall as a culmination of the promenade event. The musical promenades will feature vocal ping pong with the University choir, basketball percussion by composer Damien Harron, and a ping pong DJ. The promenades are now sold out, however on the day tickets will be available to those wishing to see the finale of Ping! in the Butterworth Hall taking place at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. No need to book, just turn up and FREE tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

As well as the promenade performances, Warwick Arts Centre will be offering an afternoon packed full of drop in fun family events, including drumming workshops and ping pong badge-making. Table tennis enthusiasts are invited to enter a variety of different short competitions, and can join the attempt to beat the world record for the most players taking part in a consecutive table tennis rally. Visitors can also challenge the Robo Pong 2050 table tennis robot and get coaching from the Fusion Table Tennis Club. No need to book for these events – just come along from 12noon on Sat 3 Mar for a fascinating and exhilarating afternoon. See you there!
