Victoria Melody as funeral director, Mike Melody in a white coffin

Last minute search for local brass musicians

Posted on

A last minute search has been launched to find a group of local brass musicians to accompany an award winning British artist and performer when she heads to Warwick Arts Centre on Tue 6 June.

Victoria Melody’s new show sees her team up with her dad, TV antique dealer Mike Melody, to present Ugly Chief – a comedy based on true-life events – and local musicians are being sought to perform as part of the grand finale of the show forming a New Orleans style jazz band.

In 2013, Mike was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and given five years to live. Victoria was put in charge of planning the funeral (complete with eulogies, a New Orleans jazz procession and a congregation dressed in Blackpool FC tangerine). A year later the doctors realised they had misdiagnosed Mike – but he and Victoria have decided to go ahead with the funeral anyway.

Ugly Chief is performed by a real-life father and daughter. It explores the taboos around death and its practicalities, and the fractious relationship with a parent whose opinions you don’t always agree with. For the show, Victoria trained as a funeral director in order to look at the British funeral industry. Her preparation also took her on journey looking at how we deal with death in modern society and the relationship between father and daughter.

The team are looking for groups or musicians and individuals who want to take part in the show. If you are interested you are invited to attend the workshop below to rehearse the music which will then be played in the show:
Workshop: Tues 6th June @ 6pm
Hall Band Room 1, University of Warwick, Gibbet Hill Rd, Coventry CV4 7AL
(refreshments provided)

Afterwards participants will take part in the show’s performance at 7.45pm at Warwick Arts Centre.

The only criteria to take part is an ability to play a brass instrument and be over 16 years of age. There will be 3 ability groups for the workshop: beginner/intermediate/advanced but unfortunately we cannot accept complete beginners.

Places are limited so please RSVP to janice.brittain@farnhammaltings.com or text 07961 392254 to receive booking confirmation and further details.
