BackStage Youth

Aged 14-22? Go behind the scenes and get unique, first-hand experience - in sound and lighting, wardrobe and more - through a series of technical theatre workshops.

Backstage Youth is a collaboration between Warwick Arts Centre, the Belgrade Theatre and a number of performing arts partners from the Coventry area. We joined forces to offer workshops, courses and other opportunities that create a pathway for young people in the Midlands into technical theatre.

What to expect

The programme is currently free of charge, and no previous experience is needed to take part. You’ll be given the chance to develop new skills and learn all about theatre production from current theatre professionals.

Discover first-hand a range of off-stage roles in lighting, sound, stage management, wardrobe and more - and take your first step towards a production apprenticeship and a career in theatre and performance. Current participants have gone on to work on professional shows in Coventry venues.

The programme was started in summer 2019 to nurture talent for Coventry City of Culture and beyond. A series of weekly drop-in sessions, in collaboration with Media Mania, took place at the Shopfront Theatre in Coventry, with further specialised sessions at Warwick Arts Centre and the Belgrade Theatre.
