Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate child of an English Royal Navy captain and an African slave, this film features a central star-making performance from Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

Set in the late 18th century, Dido is raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson). Although her birth right affords her certain privileges, her status as a “mulatto” means she can only look in envy whilst her half-cousin Elizabeth looks for a suitor.

Director Amma Asante has crafted an elegant period drama which deftly explores race and status against the rising tide of the Abolitionist movement.
