Mary (Fanning) is a wayward teen who spends more time reading scary literature than helping around the house. When she encounters handsome and rebellious poet Percy Shelley (Booth), they fall into an intense relationship which Mary’s family strongly disapprove of, leading the couple to elope in disgrace. While staying at Lake Geneva, in the home of Lord Byron (Sturridge), the guests are challenged to write a ghost story; here, Mary conceives her novel, Frankenstein, and one the most iconic characters in literary history is born.
