A film 12 years in the making. In 2002, Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise/ Sunset / Midnight) cast six year old Ellar Coltrane as Mason. In the intervening years, Linklater regularly filmed the boy, as he grew from child to teenager to young adult.

Through Mason we see all the milestones of growing up, as his voice breaks, as he gets taller and ganglier, as his heart gets broken for the first time. All this is made all the more effective as we see a real boy growing up with the world visibly changing around him.

Starring alongside Coltrane is Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as Mason’s divorced parents and Linklater’s own daughter as Mason’s older sister.
