This masterpiece of French animation from 1980 has been cited by Hayao Miyazaki as one of his main influences, which are visible in many Studio Ghibli films. Adapted from a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, the film is about the tyrannical King of Takicardia who is in love with a portrait of a young shepherdess. At night, the portrait comes to life and when the shepherdess runs away with another living portrait, the King mounts a search for the pair.
