When 12 alien spacecraft land around the world, linguistic expert Dr. Louise Banks (Amy Adams) and theoretical physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) are recruited by the US military to obtain the answer to the question “what do they want?”. As the unlikely pair collaborate to solve this extra-terrestrial translation puzzle, 11 other teams around the world are attempting to do the same.

From the director of Sicario and Prisoners, Arrival plays with the idea that our view of the world is shaped, if not determined, by the language we speak, and places this in the context of a politically divided planet, which is in danger of misinterpreting the aliens’ intentions and launching a war of its own making.
