Japan, 1944. Following her arranged marriage to Naval Officer Shusaku (Hosoya), artistic 18-year-old Suzu (Nônen) moves to Kure in Hiroshima, a major Naval base and home to Japan’s largest battleship, the Yamato. Suzu adapts to life with her stern sister-in-law, sweet niece and new neighbours, sketching and drawing as she goes. As war comes to Japan, Suzu learns to make do with scarce supplies, support her neighbours, and brave the nightly air raids and the losses they bring. But, then, the summer of 1945 comes and changes everything.
