This popular and classic Chinese fable is told through words and music in the form of a trans-cultural cantata mixing Chinese and western instruments together in a fresh blend of sounds.

The Chamber Choir and narrator, Josh Dixon, lead us through this enchanting tale as Tangseng the Monk is escorted by his group of disciples, including the Monkey King, as they travel to the paradise of the West in search of the holy Sutras of Buddhism. They encounter many demons along the way – the story is packed with fights, magic, friendships and philosophical conundrums.

This new work was first performed in Nice, France last year, and this will be the UK premiere. The music is composed by Paul McGrath, Director of Music at Warwick University, the lyrics are by written by the French poet Veronique Meunier and the film images are colourised by the French painter O’dil.
