“… no British orchestra can match the Hallé under Mark Elder. This is what peak performance sounds like, and it takes decades to achieve. Savour it while you can.”

(The Spectator)

Now in his penultimate season as Hallé Music Director, Sir Mark Elder’s visit is clearly not to be missed!

Laden with the composer’s characteristic ardent, late-Romantic lyricism, Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto is famed for being fiendishly virtuosic. Performed here by the London-based Siberian pianist, Pavel Kolesnikov, an artist praised for his daring originality.

Shostakovich’s best-known symphony, his Fifth, is an emotional rollercoaster penned under the threat of communist suppression. The work re-established the composer’s reputation and its 1937 premiere was reportedly met with a 30-minute standing ovation. As the current world situation reflects equally turbulent events, this will certainly be a timely and relevant performance.
