Invisible Threads is a show about the journeys we’ve taken and about the growth, loss and strength that came about as a result of them.

When going through life, at various points, many of us feel like we are on our own. When our everyday labour and love is taken for granted, or when we suffer from the hands of our loved ones, our sense of being alone is intensified. In writing our individual journeys and sharing our experiences with each other and the wider community, it gradually became obvious to us that we have in fact always been bound by invisible threads.

This collaborative, experimental piece emerged from Maokwo's Writing the Journey workshops with migrant women living in Coventry, and grew organically through a devising process into the piece you will see in performance.

Writing the Journey is a writers’ development programme Maokwo first designed during summer 2020, to enable participants to document and share their personal journey and experiences. It is rooted in the belief that everybody has stories to tell and each and every one of them are valid and important. The first round of workshops resulted in an online showcase. This production of Invisible Threads is the result of the second round of workshops which started in April 2021. This is not the end of the road, as once these stories have been told the threads will continue to spread, and connect, continuing the journey.
