Martin Green: One-sided
Martin Green: One-sided is now on display at the Faculty of Arts Building, University of Warwick. This evolving exhibition invites you to explore the changing landscape of Coventry through the artist's unique lens.
Exhibition dates: 9 February - 4 July 2026
Venue: Faculty of Arts Building, University of Warwick
One-sided features a selection of double-sided collaged paintings and sculptures from across Coventry-based artist Martin Green’s career. Renowned for his use of found objects, which he has collected and categorised for decades, Green’s practice is rooted in autobiography and campaign.
Green’s work follows the changing cityscape of Coventry, with recent commissions including Arcade (2023). This Historic England commission resulted in a series of three-dimensional collages, which relate to the city’s since demolished shopping arcade. Like the altering cityscape, this exhibition changes over time. Addressing the concealed nature of this display, and the resulting opportunity to reveal, the artist periodically intervenes in the exhibition. Gradually, artworks are turned to uncover their reverse and a view previously unseen.
The ties to Coventry in the artist’s work are further emphasised by the artworks’ materials being sourced from this city. A strong link to place is created by the objects being discarded and salvaged from the urban environment, and transformed from detritus into beautiful objects, asking us to think carefully about what society leaves behind, the material exchange and lifespan of ordinary objects, and how they are representative of everyday life.
