Britten – Phantasy Quartet Op.2 for oboe and string trio
Edward Cowie – Colours of Dark Light for oboe and string quartet – World Premiere
Ravel – Quartet in F
Genius loves company, and when you add a wind instrument to a string ensemble something magical happens. The teenage Benjamin Britten found a completely fresh voice; for Edward Cowie, meanwhile, it’s a way to explore the outer limits of the universe itself in a stunning new work written specially for the Coull Quartet and the “blazing audacity” of oboist-extraordinaire Christopher Redgate.
This is music to astonish: but back in turn-of-the-century Paris, Ravel’s String Quartet caused outrage too! You’d never believe it today. Bright, serene and radiantly beautiful, it’s the perfect finish to an evening of music to send the imagination soaring.
